New Song Alert: Billy Idol Releases “Still Dancing” With Album Coming In April

“I’m still dancing, but now I’m not alone…I’m still dancing but now I’m in control” – Billy Idol, “Still Dancing”

I saw Billy Idol with his longtime, superb (and I believe underrated) guitarist Steve Stevens in Las Vegas in the fall of 2023 and he said, from the stage, he was working on a new album that would come out in 2025. When he said that, I thought, that seems like a long way away, but here we are in 2025 and he’s come through on that promise with the release of a brand new single “Still Dancing” and the announcement of a new album – his first in over 10 years – that will drop in April. The new album is entitled Dream Into It, and I for one, can’t wait.

Billy has been on a bit of a roll lately. Rather than releasing albums over the last few years he released a number of EPs the best of which was probably The Cage. That EP was preceded by the 2021 EP The Roadside, which had one of Billy’s best songs ever,Bitter Taste.” That song continues to blow me away. Throw in his deluxe edition celebrating the 30 year anniversary of Rebel Yell, with his great, previously unreleased version of “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore” and it’s been quite a couple of years for Billy. Hopefully this new album will have a little of that Rebel Yell magic!

I really like the new song “Still Dancing.” It definitely sounds like vintage Idol. It would be hard not to describe this song as a sequel of sorts to “Dancing With Myself.” The references are indisputable. He sings “I’m still dancing but now I’m not alone.” He also mentions “from LA to Tokyo,” also a direct reference to the song. “Dancing With Myself” was originally recorded with Billy’s first band Generation X. It was re recorded on Billy’s first EP, Don’t Stop, and was his first solo single. It was hastily added to his debut album when it became a hit. It make sense that Billy would revisit that first single, and his roots to take us through, perhaps, a creative rebirth?

The track starts with a ticking drum machine and then Stevens’ guitar kicks in. Idol sings over an insistent drum beat/guitar riff until the chorus comes and everything explodes. Stevens guitar solo is, as expected, “choice.” The lyrics, as I mentioned, are tinged with a bit of nostalgia. I love the lyric, “I smashed hotels, And hurt myself, but I always stayed a believer, a believer…” I think we’ve all been there, looking back at our misspent youth. This song was made for a crowd to sing along with.

Here is the official video for “Still Dancing”… I’m definitely going to have to add this to my Playlist: Songs About Dancing (For Wallflowers).

I think this is a great first single from a highly anticipated – by us down here at B&V anyway – Billy Idol album. It’s been a wild few years with the Stones, Peter Gabriel, the Black Crowes and the Cure all releasing albums after more than a decade and sometimes more than 2 decades but we welcome all new rock n roll from older artists here at B&V! Check out this new tune at maximum volume, preferably in the car... watch for cops because I guarantee you’ll end up speeding… at least I know I did when I played this in my car.

Cheers!
